Redefining Public Safety in Los Angeles County

Join community members, academics, law enforcement professionals and elected officials for a day of discussion on community policing and redefining public safety. This free public event. Space is limited and the event sold out. If you have a reservation and are unable to attend, please cancel your reservation to give your seat to someone on the waitlist. Getting there: Plan your trip using Metro, or if you're driving, park in the lot across the street.

 

Agenda:

  • 8:30-9:30 a.m. – Registration & Breakfast
  • 9:30 a.m. – Opening Remarks
  • 9:45 a.m. – Keynote Speaker: Jerome Dixon
  • 10:45 a.m. – To Be or Not to Be: An Elected Sheriff
    This panel session discusses the structure of elected sheriff or appointed police chiefs and highlights the characteristics which effectively provide greater accountability, transparency and oversight opportunities.
  • 12:30 p.m. – Calming a Crisis: De-escalating Use of Force
    This interactive session explores factors that lead to use of force and the efforts to mitigate these factors. The Multiple Interactive Learning Objectives (MILO) simulator will be used as a tool to provide examples of de-escalation and diversion.
  • 2:15 p.m. – Where Do We Go From Here?  A small group discussion led by table facilitators.
  • 3:45 p.m. – Closing Remarks
