Communications Manager

Jennifer M. Wicks serves as the Communications Manager of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Civilian Oversight Commission. She is a motivated professional, accomplished in public information strategies, building and maintaining relationships, and organizational productivity.

A passionate public servant, Wicks has held various public affairs positions within the County of Los Angeles over the last decade, including at the Department of Public Health and the Countywide Communications division of the Chief Executive Office. She has managed crisis communications during the COVID-19 pandemic, fatal officer shootings, and numerous public health emergencies. A team player and avid communicator, Wicks has focused her efforts on building brand awareness, grassroots public relations outreach campaigns, and community information efforts in progressive roles. 

Prior to her employment with the County of Los Angeles, Wicks served as a Marketing Communications Manager with a private financial company. In this role, she excelled at developing and executing marketing campaigns, managing a marketing team, analyzing the return on investment for a significant advertising budget, and planning logistics and content for major events.

Wicks served nine years in the United States Army Reserve and was honorably discharged at the end of her contract term. She received several Army Commendation Medals, Achievement Medals, and other recognition for her service. She also achieved the title of “Best Warrior” with the 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command (ESC) in the 2018 competition.

In other roles as a public servant in the nonprofit, government, and private sectors, she expanded her skills as a communications professional and a team leader.

Wicks earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from Iowa State University and a master’s degree in Public Administration from Anna Maria College. She studied abroad at London Metropolitan University and participated in several volunteer opportunities and internships while obtaining her education. A native of Iowa, Wicks has settled in Southern California and enjoys spending time with her family.
